Community media and rural ComDev: central themes of IAMCR pre-conferences

Region as frame

Hyderabad, India is hosting the 2014 IAMCR conference on July 15-19, touching on the theme “Region as Frame: Politics, Presence, Practice”. Two pre-conference events will focus respectively on:

a. Building Community – Shaping Change. The Role of Community, Citizen and Alternative Media in Regional Transformation (July 13-14)

b. Communication for sustainable rural development and social change (July 14)

Both the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) are proud to be active contributors to these preparatory events, which will cover topics related to innovative methodologies, new ICTs, innovation system approaches, monitoring and evaluation, and communication research.

More specifically Mario Acunzo, FAO Communication for Development officer, will be reporting on the process of the International Year of Family Farming and on FAO’s efforts to mainstream ComDev in agricultural and rural development policies, as well as to strengthen communication capacities of rural stakeholders. Suman Basnet, regional coordinator of AMARC Asia-Pacific, will facilitate discussions around the emergence of citizen and community media in the region.

The pre-conference events will be an opportunity to strengthen alliances and establish new partnerships in the area of communication for rural development, taking advantage of the regional platforms jointly supported by AMARC and FAO (Onda Rural, ComDev Asia and YenKasa Africa) as well as the specialized network Collaborative Change Communication (CCComDev). The latest is an interactive platform designed for communication and development practitioners to find information on training opportunities, access learning resources, exchange experiences and explore collaborations.
