Call for abstracts on ComDev

The 2nd Nordic Conference for Development Research will take place on 14-15 November 2013 in Helsinki, Finland. It provides a platform for researchers, government representatives and NGO-practitioners to discuss the role, methodologies and dilemmas of knowledge production in and for development.

The conference invites submissions of abstracts to a number of thematic working groups. Among these:

WG 15: Communications for development – the role of the media in achieving development goals

With particular emphasis on themes of health governance and resilience, this working group invite papers from scholars working on different aspects of communications for development research internationally. For example, in what contexts do communications approaches prove to be effective in meeting development aims?  What ways can media interventions support existing initiatives to multiply their effect? And how can researchers’ best demonstrate the impact of media and communication interventions, including social media? How might researchers best research media interventions to inform knowledge of the sector, and to inform future interventions and policy decision making? (More on WG 15)

WG 16: Does it work? Communication for development in a critical vein

This working group invites papers that critically investigate the outcomes of communication for development initiatives. The thematic nexus centers on the use of media and communication in development processes, unpacking the role of media as technology and communication as process in the social and cultural transformations of society. How do we know if and how communication for development works? The theme includes both institution-driven as well as social movement driven and community-based experiences of engaging with media and communication to articulate processes of development and social change, exploring issues that range from social mobilization, service delivery, civic engagement and public debate to advocacy, social accountability and policy change. (More on WG 16)

Abstract should be submitted by June 3, 2013 directly to the workshop coordinators of the working group with copy to: nordicdevelopment2013[at]gmail.com
