Professional study incorporates Comdev in its curriculum

Communication for Development (ComDev) constitutes one of the modules for the 1.5 – year off-campus degree on Professional Masters in Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management (TMEM) in the Philippines. Under the course TMEM 211, the subject introduces students to Comdev as being constitutive of the job of any marine protected area manager. The subject covers strategic ComDev planning for TMEM where students are taught how to develop communication plan aimed at addressing selected issues confronting their marine resources.

Other ComDev topics such as communication materials production, pre-testing, effective presentations, and communication research in TMEM have also been incorporated in other relevant technical subjects of the course. Handling the Comdev modules are Dr. Cleofe S. Torres and Dr. Ma. Stella C. Tirol, faculty from UPLB.  The FAO handbook on Communication for Rural Development serves as the main reference for the module.

TMEM is funded by USAID and is a joint program of three UP campuses of the University of the Philippines System: UP Diliman, UP Los Banos and UP Visayas. It aims to build the capabilities of on-the-job environmental managers. Utilizing the integrated ecosystem approach, it is multidisciplinary and is offered on a trimester basis.
