UN Decade of Family Farming starts this May 2019

Building on the success of the International Year of Family Farming last 2014, a Global Launch of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming will take place at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Headquarters in Rome, Italy on 29 May 2019. The activity will be co-organized by the FAO and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) as the Joint Secretariat of the UN Decade. 

Prior to the launch, a farmers’ knowledge exchange sessions and regional dialogues on priorities for the implementation of the Decade will be conducted on 27 and 28 May 2019. This will be open to the representatives of the relevant stakeholders coming from the government, civil society organizations, producers organizations, academia, and the private sector.

Based on studies, family farming produces over 80 per cent of world’s food supply while improving environmental sustainability in agriculture. The Decade aims at focusing on the efforts of the international community to work collectively on the design and implementation of comprehensive economic, environmental, and social policies in order to create a conducive environment and strengthen the position of family farming.
