United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

UNESCO works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures, and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect, and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’S mission and activities.

Program: International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC)

The IPDC is a multilateral forum in the UN system designed to mobilize the international community on media development in developing countries. The Programme provides support for media projects submitted by local media organizations seeking to expand opportunities for free, independent, and pluralistic media in developing countries. The proposals must have a clear objective contributing to the promotion of freedom of expression and media pluralism, development of community media, or human resource development. Particular attention is given to proposals from least developed, landlocked, and small island countries, as well countries in conflict or post-conflict situations.

The UNESCO-IPDC Prize for Rural Communication is intended to recognize a meritorious and innovative activity in improving communication in rural communities, chiefly in developing countries.
