Radio Jamana’s Kodon Yiriba, the 2024 Liz Hughes Award runner-up for Her Farm Radio, is a transformative program addressing gender equality and social issues in Mali’s Koutiala region, reports Yenkasa Africa.
Co-hosted by Ibrahim Dembele and Maïmouna Ouattara, the weekly show raises awareness about sexual harassment and family issues, empowering listeners to report incidents and fostering community dialogue.
Targeting a diverse audience, including parents, adolescents, and local leaders, it collaborates with NGOs and religious figures to highlight women’s rights. The program features a segment called “Her Voice,” amplifying women’s perspectives and encouraging open conversations through stories that resonate widely.
Despite challenges in discussing sensitive topics, the show breaks cultural taboos, promotes sexual education, and inspires shifts in attitudes, such as parents discussing taboo subjects with their children.
Looking forward, Kodon Yiriba aims to tackle harmful practices like early and forced marriages, reinforcing its vital role in promoting gender equality and community empowerment.
