International Day for Disaster Reduction 2015

International Day for Disaster Reduction 2015

The International Day for Disaster Reduction is on October 13. This is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of disaster risk reduction. It’s also a day to encourage every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.

This year’s celebration focuses on traditional, indigenous and local knowledge, which complement modern science and boost the resilience of individuals and societies.

The International Day for Disaster Reduction started in 1989 with the approval by the United Nations General Assembly. The UN General Assembly sees International Day as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.

This event is organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and man-made hazards, as set down in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
